FROM THE REPAIR BENCH

What We've Learned From Thousands of Broken Phones

We fix phones for a living. We've seen every possible way a phone can be destroyed β€” dropped in toilets, sat on, run over, left on car roofs, dropped in the Gulf of Mexico. After thousands of repairs, we've noticed that the people who never seem to break their phones share a few common habits.

None of these are complicated. Most cost less than $20. And all of them are cheaper than a screen replacement.

WHAT WE SEE EVERY DAY

The Most Common Ways Phones Get Destroyed

Dropped face-down without a screen protectorMost common
Dropped in water / toilet / sinkVery common
Sat on or stepped onCommon
Fell out of pocket while sittingCommon
Knocked off a counter or tableCommon
Dropped while walking and looking at screenVery common
THE 6 HABITS

What the People Who Never Break Their Phones Do

1

Get a real case β€” not a fashion case

Not a clear plastic shell that's 1mm thick. Not a fashion case with no lip. A case with actual drop protection β€” raised edges around the screen and camera, shock-absorbing corners. OtterBox, Spigen, and UAG make solid options at different price points. The $12 Amazon case is not the same thing.

2

Use a tempered glass screen protector

A $15 screen protector absorbs the impact that would otherwise crack your $200 display. It's the best ROI in consumer electronics. When it shatters, you peel it off and replace it for $15. Without one, you're in our shop spending $150–$300. We've seen this play out thousands of times.

3

Don't put your phone in the same pocket as your keys

Keys scratch screens and can crack glass even inside a case if the pressure is right. Separate pockets, always. Or get a case with a raised bezel that keeps the screen off flat surfaces. This is one of those habits that sounds trivial until you're looking at a spider-web crack.

4

Be paranoid near water β€” even with a "waterproof" phone

IP ratings degrade over time as seals wear out and the adhesive around ports loosens. Your two-year-old iPhone 15 is not as water-resistant as it was on day one. We see water damage on phones that were "waterproof" all the time. Treat every phone like it's not waterproof and you'll never be surprised.

5

Don't use your phone while walking

The majority of drop damage happens during distracted walking β€” stepping off a curb, bumping into someone, or just losing grip while looking at the screen. It sounds obvious until it happens to you. Stopping for 30 seconds to read a text is worth it.

6

Back up your data β€” today, not someday

This isn't about preventing physical damage, but it's the most important thing on this list. If your phone is destroyed tomorrow, what do you lose? Photos, contacts, messages, authenticator apps? If the answer is 'everything,' fix that today. iCloud, Google Photos, and local backups are all free or cheap. There's no excuse.
