A degraded battery can make a perfectly good phone feel broken. Slow performance, random shutdowns, constant charging — these are all symptoms people associate with an aging phone when the real culprit is a battery that's past its prime.
A battery replacement typically costs a fraction of a new phone and takes under an hour. Here are the five signs that it's time.
Does Your Phone Do Any of These?
It dies before the end of the day
If you're charging your phone twice a day and it's less than three years old, the battery is almost certainly the culprit. A healthy battery should comfortably get you through a full day of normal use. If yours can't, it's not your apps — it's the cells.
It shuts off at 20%, 30%, or even 40%
This is a classic sign of a degraded battery. The charge indicator is no longer accurate because the battery can't hold a consistent voltage. When the cells can't deliver enough power at lower charge levels, the phone cuts out to protect itself — even though the indicator says there's charge left.
It gets unusually hot while charging or in use
A swollen or degraded battery generates more heat than a healthy one. If your phone is warm to the touch just sitting on a table — not running anything heavy — that's a red flag. Heat accelerates further degradation and can damage other components over time.
The back of the phone is bulging
This is a swollen battery and it is a safety issue. Stop using the phone and bring it in immediately. Swollen lithium-ion batteries can rupture, leak, or in rare cases catch fire. Don't leave it charging unattended, don't put it in your pocket, and don't try to puncture or pry it out yourself.
Your phone is slow and you've already tried everything
Apple introduced performance throttling to protect devices with degraded batteries from unexpected shutdowns — which means a weak battery can make an older iPhone feel sluggish even when nothing else is wrong. A new battery often restores full performance. Android devices can exhibit similar slowdowns as the system compensates for inconsistent power delivery.
